CCTV surveillance will be stepped up at Liverpool’s Birkenhead Park, accompanied by more police patrols, following a spate of vandalism and break-ins, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

The park has been targeted twice in the last week, with break-ins at Birkenhead Park visitor centre and Birkenhead St Mary’s Cricket Club.

In September vandals set fire to the park’s 168-year-old Swiss Bridge, causing £20,000 of damage. The bridge requires significant reconstruction and consolidation work before it can be used again.

Property inside the visitor centre will now be marked with a unique code and a spray will be installed which marks anyone inside the building when the intruder alarm is activated.

There will also be extra CCTV cameras with increased resolution and new external sensors linked to audible warnings and spotlights to illuminate intruders.

Community Patrol Officers have been tasked to focus extra attention to the park and its boundary and police are increasing their patrols, targeting times of day and locations at higher risk of crime.
