Newly installed CCTV cameras help curb anti-social behaviour in Doncaster town centre

Following a spat of anti-social behaviour around the St James flats in the Balby Bridge area of Doncaster, local authorities decided to have CCTV systems installed in the area and they’re already seeing a sizeable reduction in crime levels.

According to a news report in the local media on this topic, previous problems included large groups congregating in stairwells, people urinating and defecating in communal places, open drug usage and extensive littering and fly tipping.

The cameras have now been installed in all of the stairwells and communal areas at the flats, funded by St Leger Homes, the arms length management company who look after Council housing in Doncaster.

“The problems at the estate were occurring on a nightly basis before these cameras were fitted,” said Bill Hotchkiss, Head of Community Safety for Doncaster Council.

“We are now in the positive position where we have seen a dramatic reduction in incidents and more importantly there has been no dispersal to other parts of the estate.”

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: “It is essential that we safeguard the wellbeing of the residents of these flats and ensure that everyone has the peaceful lives they are entitled to. We have taken the step to increase the amount of CCTV at the site, and this has had an immediate and positive effect on behaviours at the estate, saving valuable resources in dealing with these issues. We will continue our zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour by taking measures such as these.”
