Second council CCTV “spy car” to tackle illegal parking outside schools in Stoke-on-Trent

A local council has decided to purchase a second CCTV “spy car” as part of an all-out campaign to tackle illegal parking outside schools, a news report in the local media can reveal.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has bought a new £74,000 CCTV ‘spy’ car after its first vehicle netted £457,000 in parking fines in just four years. The move follows 633 calls for enforcement action outside city schools in the past two years.

The car’s role will be to catch motorists parking in keep-clear areas and on zig-zag markings and pedestrian crossings, with drivers facing a £70 fine for each offence.

Deputy council leader Paul Shotton said: “We are receiving a large increase in requests for enforcement from schools due to illegal and unsafe parking outside their gates.

“With all schools asking for enforcement at the same time, we can’t meet all demand and currently have a four-week waiting list.

“The CCTV car will be used to ensure the safety of our children going to and from school and will help us to reduce the safety risks caused by illegal and inconsiderate parking. This is absolutely not about making money by fining motorists.”
