Wrexham town centre could get new CCTV cameras and free Wi-Fi hotspots as part of a £400,000 proposal to combat crime, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

Wrexham council is looking to upgrade its CCTV system, which currently consists of about 95 cameras across the county, with a new hybrid wireless system that will allow free Wi-Fi hotspots to be installed across the town centre.

Furthermore, cameras would be moveable under the upgrade meaning they could be shifted around Wrexham to tackle crime spots as they arise.

It comes as a new Wrexham CCTV control room, whose location is secret, nears completion.

Wrexham council’s executive board had allocated £330,000 to that particular scheme, but it came in well under budget at £256,000.

Council leaders now propose to fund the new CCTV system, using the surplus £74,000 cash and a one off contribution of £158,000 from the local authority’s Assets and Economic Development Department’s budget for 2015/16.

In addition £168,000 is being sought from the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places regeneration fund.
