Only 1.85 million CCTV cameras installed in the UK, claims report

Although the United Kingdom is often pictured as the country with the largest number of functioning CCTV systems installed, that’s apparently not exactly the case, a recent report estimating that the actual number of cameras currently working around the country is of just around 1.85 million, which is far from the previous estimates, of around 4.2 million.

The data comes as a result of an extensive study carried out by deputy chief constable of Cheshire, Graeme Gerrard, who’s also the lead on CCTV issues for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

After prompting a Cheshire-wide study regarding the use of CCTV within the business environment and extrapolating the data for the rest of the country, based on population and land use patterns, Mr. Gerrard concluded that there are around 1.7-million privately-owned cameras installed across the UK.

By adding to that number the 33,433 cameras operated by local authorities and 115,000 as an estimate of the number of cameras on public transit throughout the UK, we get the 1.85 million figure.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether the aforementioned report will prompt an overall review of the surveillance solutions installed across the country.
