  1. New £2.5 million CCTV system in Cumbria helps tackle crime

Comments Off on New £2.5 million CCTV system in Cumbria helps tackle crime

The new 53-camera CCTV system installed in Cumbria is already helping police officers investigate various incidents in the initial days since its official launch, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The £2.5 million cutting-edge network, placed on high streets and residential roads, covers key locations across places including Carlisle, Penrith, Workington and Whitehaven, and went live 11 days ago after nearly two years of planning.

The cameras will be producing high quality images that are expected to provide better evidence in court, prompting criminals to confess and save victims from having to testify.

Police say staff will monitor it round-the-clock at peak times for trouble, such as weekends, with other trained workers on hand to step in at all other times. All images will be recorded and kept for 30 days, unless stored longer as evidence.

The county’s chief constable, Jerry Graham, has said the cameras will help direct resources to where they would be most effective. The system is being run from the Cumbria Police communications centre at the force’s Carleton Hall headquarters, near Penrith.

CCTV Surveillance has a very comprehensive level of expertise in the field of security installations, delivering high-quality, bespoke installations, designed to perfectly match the customers’ needs.

One of the main features of our CCTV systems is that they are integrated to work with a standard PC monitor via sophisticated CCTV software that allows individual users to set their own criteria for viewing selected footage from particular CCTV cameras within the network. Password and security features limit the viewing of certain cameras to specific groups of people, enabling you to securely manage who is able to see particular areas of activity.

The CCTV software enables “live” footage to be viewed remotely from any or all connected CCTV cameras as events happen and without degradation of video quality, allowing you to monitor your premises when offsite.

Its site tree facility allows servers and individual cameras to be accessed quickly, and the inclusion of the multi-site viewing facility makes the management of sites more efficient and responses to events even quicker.

Remote management of your CCTV network via LAN, WAN, or the internet is also possible through the CCTV software. Historical footage can be viewed remotely, and DVR setup parameters can be configured.

  2. Petition asks for the installation of CCTV at Marine Gardens in Carrickfergus

Comments Off on Petition asks for the installation of CCTV at Marine Gardens in Carrickfergus

Residents in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, have signed a petition to have a CCTV system installed at Marine Gardens, a local pirate-themed park, following an arson attack in the play area, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.

The was widespread condemnation among the local community over the incident, which saw youths set fire to a trampoline. Vandalism and anti-social behaviour have been recurring problems at the outdoor venue, which re-opened in 2012 following a £1.3 million regeneration scheme.

In 2013, several wooden panels were broken and graffiti daubed on the replica galleon ship at the centre of the children’s play zone. Some £10,000 worth of damage was caused the following year after vandals smashed decorative lighting at the war memorial.

In response to the latest incident, an online petition set up by members of Progressive Unionist Party in Carrickfergus is calling for the installation of CCTV at the location in order to deter criminals.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Mid and East Antrim Borough Council said: “[We] work in close co-operation with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour such as the arson attack at the Marine Gardens in Carrickfergus last weekend.

“The installation and running of a CCTV system for any part of the borough would have significant resource implications which would have to be approved by council on foot of a comprehensive business case being produced by officials.”

  3. Stornoway taxis to install CCTV cameras

Comments Off on Stornoway taxis to install CCTV cameras

Some 40 black cabs in Stornoway will be equipped with CCTV cameras for the first time to protect drivers – but they won’t be able to view the footage, a news report in the local newspaper has revealed.

City Cabs has announced it is giving its taxi drivers the option to have their vehicle fitted with a safety camera, after the scheme was approved by the city council. The company believes that cab cameras will make drivers feel safe at work and will “defuse” any situation that may arise in the vehicle between a driver and a passenger. However the footage can only be viewed by the council or police.

The new cameras will also be fitted with a part-time audio function, that will act as a “panic button” for drivers. This will give drivers the ability to record what is being said in their taxi for four minutes – in the event they were being
verbally abused.

Gavin Barrie, convenor of the regulatory and licensing sub-committee said: “We think it is a positive move and we encourage taxi drivers to take up the opportunity. It will remain voluntary.”

Comments Off on Hull street affected by antis-social behaviour denied CCTV due to running costs

A Hull street affected by serious anti-social behaviour has been denied the installation of a CCTV system to the costs involved, a news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

People living in Linnaeus Street and Walker Street say there are frequent burglaries, drug use and problems with speeding vehicles, including near Adelaide Primary School.

Walker Street resident, Chris Bird, 80, said: “I’ve been speaking to the council about getting CCTV here for about ten years and had no luck. They always just say it’s not cost- effective.”

  5. Police detainee transport vans to be fitted with CCTV

Comments Off on Police detainee transport vans to be fitted with CCTV

The police vans that transport detainees to cells in London will be fitted with CCTV on the future, as a result of a campaign by families bereaved by deaths in custody, a recent news report has been able to reveal.

Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, the Metropolitan police commissioner, said every borough will have at least one van with five video cameras, three microphones and two monitors, in an attempt to increase transparency in his force.

The commissioner said the decision was influenced by concerns raised by a number of bereaved families, including relatives of Sean Rigg, who died in 2008 of a heart attack at Brixton police station, London.

The decision to roll out the cameras follows two trials in 2012 in Lambeth and Haringey, and 121 of 129 vans have already been fitted, with the remainder of the fleet due to follow suit in the coming months.

All future vans commissioned by the Met to transport detainees to custody will have the CCTV system fitted as standard. The system turns on when the car is started and continues for 30 minutes after the engine is switched off.

  6. Police Scotland is pressing for a single, centralised CCTV network

Comments Off on Police Scotland is pressing for a single, centralised CCTV network

The Scottish police force is pushing for a centralised CCTV network to cover the country’s streets, shops and public spaces after warning most of the current cameras are ageing, unreliable and potentially unlawful, a recent news report in a major media outlet has been able to reveal.

Police Scotland has told Scottish ministers it wants to scrap what it sees as an outdated system of local, decentralised control over 2,800 CCTV cameras and replace it with a single police-run national network using high-definition digital cameras, installed at a cost of at least £10m.

The proposal is the central recommendation of a confidential Police Scotland review from 2013 that warns many of Scotland’s ageing CCTV systems are close to collapse; a large number are kept running using second-hand parts bought at high cost and are at risk of “instant failure”, it claims.

The Police Scotland review found 80% of the country’s public-space CCTV cameras – a definition that excludes schools, hospitals and housing association land, were old analogue systems.

Furthermore, 85% of the “matrices” – the recording, control systems and TV monitors that back them up, were analogue, while 80% also used analogue communications systems. While nearly all the cameras were now hybrids, with retrofitted digital encoders, they were vulnerable to complete failure if analogue parts broke down.

  7. CCTV Surveillance systems can help prevent bogus liability claims

Comments Off on CCTV Surveillance systems can help prevent bogus liability claims

The deployment of extensive CCTV surveillance systems across supermarkets could help prevent bogus liability claims, a phenomenon that’s seen a huge surge over the past couple of years, according to a recent media news report.

A study by the Association of British Insurers found that the number of people falsely trying to claim compensation for things like slipping over in a supermarket has gone up 75% in a year – making it the fastest growing form of insurance fraud.

The ABI pointed out that the figures revealed that there’s nothing soft about this target. Insurers are keener than ever to identify fraud, so any fake claims are more likely than ever to be uncovered. In fact, insurers uncover 350 insurance frauds worth £3.6 million every day – which is a record high for the industry.

And in the majority of cases, high-profile or otherwise, it’s the CCTV surveillance systems that prove the fraudsters’ malicious intentions.

By using a range of cameras and accessories from CCTV Surveillance Ltd you can ensure that your CCTV system can adapt to all situations and provide your retail premises or company with excellent safety and security. Covert cameras can be added to your CCTV installation. These cameras are the ultimate in hidden surveillance technology. They are tiny devices that can be hidden in places such as smoke alarms that enable you to spy on criminals and catch them in the act.

The CCTV software enables “live” footage to be viewed remotely from any or all connected CCTV cameras as events happen and without degradation of video quality, allowing you to monitor your premises when offsite.

  8. British HGV fleets rush to install CCTV cameras due to growing problem of illegal immigrants

Comments Off on British HGV fleets rush to install CCTV cameras due to growing problem of illegal immigrants

Sales of CCTV cameras installed on British HGV fleets have increased by an impressive 20 percent due to the growing problem of illegal migrants trying to board the trucks in Calas, a recent news report has been able to reveal.

Haulage companies are having to equip their lorries with 360 degree CCTV systems and sensors on cab and rear doors in order to avoid £2,000 fines for every illegal stowaway brought into the UK. Fines can have a significantly negative effect on businesses, with £12.4m being handed out to HGV operators caught with illegal stowaways in the past six years.

Kevin Hopper, Managing Director for Hauliers Brian Yeardley Continental, based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, said: “Our trucks spend 90% of their time in Europe – mainly Spain, Portugal, France and Italy. We constantly try to ensure our drivers’ safety and welfare is protected and stowaways are prevented from getting on board.

“Our drivers are often away for up to eight weeks at a time and it gives me peace of mind knowing that when they are parked up, the cameras are there to help protect them from stowaways and thieves.”

  9. Councillors ask for town to be equipped with integrated CCTV camera system

Comments Off on Councillors ask for town to be equipped with integrated CCTV camera system

Members of the executive committee of Barrow Borough Council have asked for the inclusion of Dalton town centre in Cumbria police and crime commissioner Richard Rhodes’ plans for a “super surveillance” system in the county, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

Dalton was not originally included in the extension plans, but the local authority believes that it should benefit from the extra protection offered by a CCTV system.

Barrow Borough Council has managed a public space CCTV system since 1995, however the police and crime commissioner’s office has taken over the responsibility, funding an integrated system for Cumbria.

Councillor David Pidduck said: “We have done it informally and told (Mr Rhodes) that we would not be happy without the system for Dalton and we have made that quite clear.

“We don’t just see CCTV as simple as solving crime. Retailers feel more comfortable with CCTV in their areas. It can be used to find people.

“We will be pressing for the cameras for Dalton.”

  10. Council turns to roadside CCTV in a bid to protect highways workers against road rage

Comments Off on Council turns to roadside CCTV in a bid to protect highways workers against road rage

A local council has decided to deploy mobile, roadside CCTV systems as a means to protect its highways workers against abusive motorists, a recent news report in the local media could reveal.

Somerset County Council decided to take action after fourteen workers have seriously injured on the counties roads in the last twelve months while operating traffic management systems. Incidents of motorists ignoring signs, as well as physically or verbally abusing workers have also been recorded.

Stop and go boards, traditionally held in place by road workers, will be replaced by self-standing signage, all of which will be fitted with cameras and warnings.

The equipment is designed to reduce accidents, and abuse of road workers, by removing the need for operatives to stand close to moving traffic.
