A “pack of lies”: that is how a judge described in court a man’s made-up story about a mugging that was proved wrong by CCTV cameras. Teesside man Alex Jones was helping his wife, who was a cash collector, but lost a bag of money. He used the robbery ruse to hide this error, but CCTV checks on the scene of the ‘crime’ showed no robbery, and Jones was later arrested for perverting the course of justice.

Cash and the tap were taken from a takeaway restaurant as similar premises were targeted in the Midlands. Police believe the series of attacks could be the work of one man, and have released an E-fit image of the suspected offender. Two hairdressers were among the other businesses which have been hit. In all the cases cash was stolen.

They were seen by surveillance cameras climbing over a low wall to the building where two of them helped the third shimmy up a wall and into a window. Inside they caused £500 of damage when they ripped the safe out of an office.
